Light painting is so much fun! That is, if you enjoy spending time in terrifyingly dark places, being yelled at and chased by security guards and taking hundreds of photos to get only seconds of film. Seriously, I had a security guard tell me the mall was trademarked and I couldn’t take pictures of it! Well don’t worry, if that doesn’t sound like your idea of fun, you can just watch the video below
.

But first! What exactly is light painting? By leaving a camera’s shutter open for long periods of time, one can capture everything that happens within that time. If you’ve ever spelled your name in the air with sparklers as a kid you know how to light paint. Check out some of the stills painted below. Click the thumbnails!
I started doing some tests in my garage, and it was such a blasty blast (a blast multiplied by two) that I wanted to animate some of these paintings. After scoping out some locations, we started taking pictures and light painting. Hundreds of photos later this is the result. Enjoy!
If anyone is interested in doing some light painting of their own, let me know, and I’ll post an instructional video in the future. Let me know what you think about the light painting animation video and pictures in the comments below!
